Francois Sarhan

 (b. September 30, 1972, Rouen). French composer, director and visual artist,  performed in Asia, Africa, America and Europe.

He studied composition with Brian Ferneyhough, Jonathan Harvey, Magnus Lindberg, Philippe Manoury, Tristan Murail, Guy Reibel. In addition, he studied analysis, aesthetics, cello, conducting, and harmony and counterpoint with various teachers, in addition to attending Jacques Roubaud ‘s seminars on compared poetics at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes (Paris, 1999-2002).

He received his diploma in composition from the Conservatoire National de Paris in 1995. Subsequently he attended composition master classes in Szombathely (Hungary) with Brian Ferneyhough and Marco Stroppa (1996-97) with the aid of several SACEM grants as well as working at IRCAM(1997-98). He then graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in analysis (1999) and composition (2000).

His works have been presented at international festivals, including Musica (Strasbourg), Donaueschingen, Wittener Musik Tagen, Ars Musica (Brussels), Holland Festival, Maerzmusik (Berlin), etc. He composed a chamber opera for the Aix-en-Provence Lyrical Art Festival (july 2003), as well as a first monographic CD for the french label Zig zag Territoires.

Numerous French soloists, including Nicolas Dautricourt, Céline Frisch, Noemi Boutin, Bela quartet, François Salque, Alexandre Tharaud, Dimitri Vassilakis, Samuel Favre, Vanessa Wagner, Diotima Quartet, Bela Quartet have performed his works. Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), Ensemble Recherche, Ictus Ensemble, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radiofrance, among others, regularly commission and perform his compositions.

He is noted for creating his own music-theatre and multimedia works in which he himself often performs. He recently collaborated with South African artist William Kentridge on Telegrams from the Nose, which was presented more than 30 times at major festivals and venues all over Europe. 

He has directed his own work since 2008 – most recently he created the chamber opera King Lear. He recently opened his first exhibition in Paris, initiating a new aspect of his art, with videos, collages and artist books.

Sarhan taught at IRCAM between 1998 and 2002, and at the Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg since 1999. Since 2015 he teaches composition at the UdK (Berlin) and occasionnally at the Musikhochschule in Dresden.

He wrote a History of Music (published in 2002 by Flammarion, Paris), and is the initiator of the artistic collective CRWTH, which has created and performed multimedia projects since 2000. 

Recent projects include a film and music theatre work produced by LOD, in Gent, called Lachez tout ! (Enough Already), with the Red Note Ensemble, a compilation of the texts from his Encyclopedia to be published in french by JM Place publishing house, a large exhibition organized by Chambord Castle in France. 

He recently premiered a show with the Neue Vocal Solisten Stuttgart, la philosophie dans le boudoir, where the singers are surrounded by three groups of audience, each of them attending a different show, thanks to subtitles which give a different content to the sung words.

Seine Werke wurden bereits bei renommierten Festivals gespielt und uraufgeführt, u.a. Ars Musica, Berliner Festspiele, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Holland Festival, Maerzmusik, Musica, Ultima Festival und Wittener Tage für Neue Musik, u.a. von folgenden Solisten und Ensembles: Danel Quartet, Nicolas Dautricourt, Christian Dierstein, Diotima Quartet, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Recherche, Céline Frisch, Ictus Ensemble, Mark Knoop, MusikFabrik, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radiofrance, François Salque, Alexandre Tharaud, Dimitri Vassilakis und Vanessa Wagner. Herr Sarhan komponierte ebenso eine Kammeroper für das Aix-en-Provence Lyrical Art Festival (2003), und veröffentlichte zwei monographische CDs: „hell (a small detail)“, 2003, und „POP-UP“, 2012. Sein aktuelles Musiktheaterprojekt „Enough Already“ wurde in Schottland, England, Frankreich, Belgien, Deutschland und den Niederlanden gespielt.

Herr Sarhan unterrichtete am IRCAM Institut von 1998 bis 2002 und unterrichtet seit 1999 an der Marc Bloch Universität in Strasbourg und seit dem Wintersemester 2014/15 an der Universität der Künste Berlin, und manchmal in Dresden Musikhochschule. Er veröffentlichte das Buch “History of Music” (2002 verlegt bei Flammarion, Paris) und ist Initiator des Künstlerkollektivs „CRWTH”, welches sich seit 2000 der Performance von Multimediaprojekten widmet.

Herr Sarhan ist neben seiner Tätigkeit als Komponist auch bildender Künstler, Enzyklopädist im surrealistischen Sinne, und gestaltet seine eigenen Projekte als Performer und Regisseur. Im Jahr 2008 arbeitete er zusammen mit dem südafrikanischen Künstler William Kentridge an dem Projekt „Telegrams from the Nose“, das mehr als 30mal innerhalb Europas gezeigt wurde. 2008 startete er seine eigenen Produktionen und schaffte letztlich eine Kammeroper über “King Lear” als Komponist, Regisseur und Filmemacher. 2010 organisierte er eine Show mit Filmen und Texten von Jan Svankmajer.

Herr Sarhan eröffnete seine ersten Ausstellungen in Johannesburg, Paris (September 2012), und Prag (Dezember 2012), um die neuen Aspekte seiner Kunst zu zeigen, wie Videos, Collagen und Kunstbücher. Die letzte Ausstellung fand in Ghent, „De Bijloke“, im Dezember 2014 statt.

Momentan arbeitet Herr Sarhan an einer Zusammenstellung der Texte seiner Enzyklopädie, sowie an einem Nachtkonzert für das SPOR Festival (Danmark), das insgesamt 12 Stunden dauern wird.

    En tant que compositeur, François Sarhan a enrichi son répertoire dans tous les genres : orchestre, musique de chambre (notamment le cycle Bobok pour 2, 3, 4 et 5 instruments à cordes), opéra de chambre (Kyrielle du Sentiment des Choses, créé au festival d'Art lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence en 2003), musique électronique, mixte.

Son oeuvre est l'objet de concerts monographiques et de portraits (ensemble Ictus, Intercontemporain, Alternance) et il est régulièrement en résidence (Automne en Normandie, Metz, Witten, Manchester, Orléans).

Il est aussi fondateur d'une structure de production de théâtre musical et de concert : crWth. Il conçoit lui-même des spectacles et des soirées et réalise des films d’animation et des vidéos. Il s'autoédite (fsarhan.com) et participe à de nombreuses manifestations pluridisciplinaires, pour la danse, le théâtre.

Il est auteur d’une "Introduction à l'histoire de la musique", (Flammarion 2004), ainsi que d'un ouvrage "Encyclopédie" qui est un recueil d’articles et d’illustrations sur des sujets divers mais dont tout est inventé.

Il a mis en scène un spectacle sur un texte original de Jacques Roubaud, A King, Lear, (2011) dont il a composé la musique. Il était compositeur en résidence à la Scène nationale d’Orléans de septembre 2009 à juin 2012.

Ses projets récents incluent des expositions, notamment à Paris, Prague et au chateau de Chambord, et des spectacles : The Last Lighthouse Keepers, à Bergen, et Wandering Rocks, au Palais de Tokyo (mai 2014).
Il a créé récemment un spectacle avec les Neue Vocal Solisten Stuttgart, la Philosophie dans le boudoir, où les chanteurs sont placés au centre, et autour le public est divisé en trois groupes. Chacun des groupes peut suivre des surtitres différents, l´un relatant un entretien d´embauche, un autre le procès d´Ulrike Meinhof et le troisième des extraits de la Philosophie dans le Boudoir, de D.A.F de Sade.  
Il anime un groupe de réflexion, POTRAVINY (potraviny-group.org), et un site consacré à son Encyclopédie, wikipedia.org. Depuis 2015 il enseigne la composition à la UdK (Berlin) et occasionellement à la Musikhochschule de Dresde.
